Description

Whether you like the word or not, it is what it is. There are no rulers in Bitcoin and, by definition, the absence of rulers in a society is called anarchy. Anarchism is the philosophy that rejects all involuntary, coercive forms of hierarchy. It is no stretch at all to say that Bitcoin is applied anarchism as it embodies the philosophy of anarchism second to none without helplessly failing after a short period of time. Au contraire, it thrives in hostile environments and is becoming stronger and more unfuckwithable than anything we’ve ever known. Bitcoin is the posterchild of anarchism.

This isn’t news, but it’s a truth that even many Bitcoiners grasp only after many years of studying Bitcoin. Keep this in mind, when you watch young Michael Goldstein give his mindblowing talk “Bitcoin: An Experiment in Anarchism” way back in 2014 at the Texas Bitcoin Conference. It’s one of the best and most important talks given on the subject of Bitcoin to date.

Remember the adage in Conway’s Law:

Any organization that designs a system (defined broadly) will produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization’s communication structure.

— Melvin E. Conway

Simply put, an organization can only produce a system that resembles its own organization. Or turned around: A hierarchic organization can never create an anarchic system, an anarchic organization can never create a hierarchic system.

To dive deeper into what this means and entails, have a look at Zack Voell’s article “Sorry, Bitcoin is still Anarchist”
